What an irony it is that I was writing about movies in my previous entry.
I chanced upon "Plaint Truth"! Not the book, but the movie.
Well, I was just happily channel-surfing when I was attracted by the dialog going on. And considering that I had just finished the book one week ago, the lines were pretty fresh in my head.
Of course I was excited and eventually, that excitement evolved into disappointment.
Jodi Picoult is my favourite author. There's no word or phrase to explain the feeling when you see the books you love brought to life by people, background sets and music. But to have them do injustice to the story? Well, you'll burn with rage and then start screaming at the TV.
I felt that the character development was insufficient, that story development was too fast and little emotion details were left out. They could not bring out the emotional intensity both in the farmhouse and the courtroom. Relationships were left blurred as well. AND they did not have introduce Amish traditions at all!
The screenwriter tried to keep as close to the book by taking exact lines BUT I felt that he lost the kick. Jodi Picoult has a way of writing punchlines that end the section with such impact it lingers in your head chapters after you passed that page.
I was disappointed. Not in the production, but that the world who watched did not get a chance to be exposed to the excellent fiction world of Jodi Picoult.
Movies never do the books justice.
